Charcoal Ash
Computational Photography. 2021
Charcoal Ash is a series of images that transcribe a sense of liminal existence experienced in urban cities by repurposing image pixel data as raw material for imagination. The work is produced through a pixel sorting algorithm that refactors pixels from collaged monochrome images of Accra, to produce graduated scenes based on density. The work is inspired by research into the range and representation, with regards to algorithm design in image based software as well as the photographic representation of the urban African landscape. The monotone scale, sharp geometries, uneven yet balanced swatches offer an imaginative space for contemplating the role digital photography can play as a material in reconsidering the place.
